YR international surcharge

I've never scrutinized my intl receipt carefully:o. I have an upcoming itn (discussed in another thread) which has been changed. I looked at my receipt: base fare $900, YR surcharge: $1300, slight less than 150% of base fare.
What is YR--why so high?
[Most of my intl trips are part of DL vacation (air + hotel) and the package is often cheaper than the airfare alone.]

Fuel surcharges. These can be known as YQ or YR.

They stopped calling them fuel surcharges years ago. It's a base that's not subject to corporate discounting and it's cheaper to change than filing new fares. What is the route, I've never seen YQ/YR that higher before?

It's not that crazy. As noted by xliioper it's just a way for DL to alter the fare without refiling or being subject to corporate discounts. For all intents and purposes it's the same as the base fare and you earn MQDs based on both the base fare and the YR (which further points to DL viewing them as one and the same for all practical purposes).

The $2300 for a J fare is pretty low so not sure I would care that much how they decided to divide the fare between those two buckets. I assume you caught a nice fare sale where they lowered the base fare significantly but didn't touch the YR so you ended up with a nice J fare but the breakdown just happened to skew to YR.

I booked a transatlantic ticket (regular V fare) a month or so ago with a base fare of $174 and a YR of $400... I guess it will earn very few miles.

YR is considered a part of the ticket for MQD purpose. So it won't earn as little as you think.

Okay, I guess it's unique to J fares. YR on coach fares to Europe is currently $400 roundtrip ($500 for premium economy). There are currently 28-day advance purchase Z fares (basis ZN5X87D1) to numerous EU destinations from JFK available for travel from 8/15 - 1/10 with a base fare of $231 each way which results in an all-in price of around $1864 roundtrip (in the case of ZRH, other countries vary due to taxes). If YR was banned, they would just raise the base fares and so it really makes little difference in the end.

My itn jfk-zrh-jfk 8/18-825 is being cancelled--no longer listed on (1)google flights, (2)EF nor on (3)DL.com--so no matter how "nice" a dealt, if it doesn't run, I can't fly.:p
PS: Through AMEX travel, with a Business Plat card, intl. business class and even some domestic is discounted as much as 25%.

during low season, it's not uncommon to see $1 fares + $200 YQ + $50 mandatory taxes/fees = $250 fares

as other people said, most airlines include YQ as part of the mileage calculation (if they based it on spend)

YQ can affect award tickets too, plus the other reasons mentioned above (not subject to discounting)

Carrier-imposed surcharges on revenue fares have nothing to do with the carrier-imposed surcharges on award tickets. There are no carried-imposed surcharges on one-way or roundtrip awards ex-US to the EU. They only come into play on ex-EU awards and are different than the surcharges on revenue fares.

I just saw a YR surcharge for the first time and came here for info. Seems odd that they would have two "fuel" surcharges (YQ and YR).

I got an extra lesson/spanking about the YQ surcharge this year from SWISS. RT ticket purchased in early Jan for travel in early April, LAX-EU for $2221

I rebooked the ticket in March for travel end of July. The fare portion dropped from $790 to $600 and the YQ increased from $1200 to $1300. Taxes increased by $1.50.

Seemed like I should get a refund of $88.50, but no. I had to pay the $100 YQ increase plus the $1.50 tax.

Twice this summer I made changes due to covid/schedule changes and the add-collect was an extra penny for taxes due to FX changes between booking and reissue dates. Sure enough they took my credit card for the penny. Why not just set a materiality bar of $2? Even the IRS rounds to the nearest dollar.

What's the circumstance of the rebooking?
